At Least 3 Dead, 2 Critically Injured, 53 Hurt in East Harlem Gas Explosion

Manhattan, NYC – At least three people died, a 15-year-old boy and a woman were critically injured, and 53 were hurt and taken to hospitals after a gas explosion in two apartment buildings on 116th Street and Park Avenue in East Harlem at around 9:00 a.m. on March 10. A thick gray smoke blanketed the neighborhood due to the impact of the blast that caused the collapse of the five-story buildings, sending debris onto nearby streets. About 250 firefighters from 44 units responded to the explosion.
