Critical Documentation For A Personal Injury Case

Victims in personal injury cases are forced to deal with the financial ramifications of their accidents. U.S. News and World Report ranked NYC as having the fourth worst traffic in the country. In 2019, before the pandemic, there were over 134,000 car accidents in New York City. The most common causes are distracted driving, improper passing, and following too closely.

Now imagine you were struck by another vehicle, and the police report links the cause of the accident to distracted driving. Although you did not cause the accident, you may have to deal with an inability to work, a loss of wages, and other financial difficulties caused by your injuries. Suppose you have mortgage obligations and a family to provide for. In that case, you will put a lot of weight on your personal injury case because the outcome is paramount to your financial survival. To enhance your chances of a favorable outcome, provide your attorney with the information and documentation they need to represent you.

Make Your Appointments

When you are injured after an accident, seek medical help. Even if you think your injuries aren’t severe enough to warrant a trip to the hospital, you want to have this confirmed by a professional. On the other hand, you may be significantly underestimating the extent of your injuries. You may choose not to get checked out by a doctor. But what happens if you have issues surface days or weeks later? Now, there is a gap, and your attorney will have to prove your injuries are a result of the accident and not something that occurred in between.

Medical records are vitally important, requiring you to get medical help and keep your appointments. Additionally, it can save significant time if your documents are on you so your attorney can immediately see what happened. If your back was injured in the accident and you have a history of back pain from a previous accident, this does not mean you cannot receive compensation. You should inform your attorney and provide him with any documentation you have of this previous injury.

Recouping Costs & Confirming Details

Compensatory damages speak toward recouping the money you lost. Granted, this applies to medical bills and lost wages, but you should save everything. How much did you spend traveling to and from the hospital, getting hotels, paying for prescription medication, and paying for other supplies for treatment? Even if your attorney doesn’t think the receipt is relevant, you still want him to make that decision.

Lastly, write down everything else. If you were in the hospital and missed a family reunion, write it down with a time and date. Annotate how much pain you are in every day, the things you can’t do, and the events you miss. This enables your attorney to fight for your case the way you deserve.
