Getting Injured While Using Public Transportation

Some New Yorkers will never own a car. Land and space within this city are valuable, and that extends to parking spots. The cost associated with owning a vehicle and the inconvenience of driving one here is not worth it for many people. They opt to use ridesharing services, taxis, and subways. Regardless of how you choose to move around New York, there is always the potential for injury.

You may understand what you should do if you are in an accident while driving, but how does this apply if you are in the back of a cab or standing in a subway car? After an injury, you may have medical bills, future appointments, and you may have an inability to work. We want to ensure you know how to seek compensation.

Subways

There are about 3.5 million people in Connecticut, to put this in perspective. On any given weekday, the subway in NYC transports more than 5 million people. If you are injured while riding on one, you can be compensated. You should note that you will be dealing with the MTA, and they have shorter statutes of limitations than other accidents you may have been in. That said, pursue the medical treatment you need, but don’t hesitate to contact a personal injury attorney

There are several ways to get hurt in the subway without ever stepping foot inside one of the cars. This extends to falling on the stairs or escalators, being assaulted due to a lack of security, or falling in the gap between the car and the platform.

What You Should Do

Like any other accident, document the scene if you are able. This includes taking pictures of where you were injured or getting contact information for anyone who was a witness. Again, the priority is your safety, so don’t delay getting medical treatment to document the accident.

Rather than a driver and an insurance company, you will be dealing with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), their lawyers, and their insurance. Choosing the right attorney is paramount because they will speak and negotiate with these agencies. Additionally, your attorney will look at the evidence to truly understand the root cause of the accident because it speaks to liability. For example, was an error committed by the driver, or were they improperly trained. There could be hazardous conditions as well.
